The NATIN Oil & Gas program

The Oil & Gas Program at the Natuur Technisch Instituut Suriname (NATIN) provides an educational opportunity to develop local workforce capacity in Suriname’s oil and gas industry. This program is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V., the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, local companies, and international oil companies operating in Suriname.

Program Objective

The goal of the program is to equip Surinamese students with specialized knowledge and skills in offshore oil and gas, enabling them to contribute to the growth and development of the national oil and gas sector.

 

Focus Areas

  1. Knowledge Development
  • The program provides students with a solid theoretical foundation in oil and gas-related disciplines.
  • Students gain knowledge of technical aspects, geology, and the environmental and safety standards applicable to the industry.
  • This prepares them to participate in complex projects and tackle technical challenges in the oil and gas sector.

 

  1. Practical Skills
    Students gain hands-on experience through internships and practical lessons. This enables them to directly apply their knowledge, which is invaluable for their professional development.

 

  1. Local Capacity Building
  • A key component of the Oil & Gas Program is increasing the number of qualified local professionals in Suriname’s oil and gas sector.
  • The program prepares students to effectively participate in the industry and contribute to Suriname’s economic growth and development.

 

NATIN Upgrade Project

The Oil & Gas Program is part of the NATIN Upgrade Project, which aims to enhance the quality and capacity of Suriname’s workforce. This project includes:

 

  • Strengthening existing NATIN programs.
  • Upgrading NATIN’s infrastructure.
  • Improving the overall sustainability and quality of the institute.

 

End Goal

The ultimate goal is to strengthen Suriname’s oil and gas sector by supporting well-trained professionals and local businesses, ensuring they can benefit from opportunities in this rapidly growing industry.

 

Project Outcomes: Successful Completion and Growing Participation

  • The first cohort began in October 2022 and is set to graduate in October 2024.
  • The second cohort started in February 2024 and will graduate in mid-2025.

 

With its focus on knowledge development, practical skills, and local capacity building, NATIN’s Oil & Gas Program contributes to a sustainable and thriving future for Suriname’s oil and gas sector.
