Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V. and the Suriname Coast Guard signed a cooperation agreement on 15 March. The collaboration will result in the optimization of safety in Surinamese waters.
The reason for this is the Nearshore Drilling Project (NSD), where from 2 April 2019 eight exploration wells will be drilled off the Surinamese coast. An emergency plan has been drawn up for the project in order to be able to respond adequately to any emergency. The coastguard has a crucial role in the emergency plan.
With the contract, the parties give substance to a declaration of intent that was signed on 20 September 2018. Thanks to the capacity building of the Coast Guard, Suriname is even better prepared to respond to any emergency at sea.
